CPS BOARD OF EDUCATION

August, 2020

On August 26, members of the Board of Education met after almost 3 months of protests for #CopsOutCPS to vote on its contract with the Chicago Police Department. By a 4-2-1 vote, members voted to keep cops in schools.

CHICAGO POLICE BOARD

June, 2020

During the June Chicago Police Board meeting, we heard from CPD Supt. David Brown who shared what the Chicago Police Department's response has been since the uprisings started after George Floyd's murder.

CPS BOARD OF EDUCATION

In this 5-hour long, contentious Board meeting, members voted 4-3 in favor of keeping police officers in schools despite student outcry for their removal. The Board then decided to delegate responsibility of the vote to Local School Councils.

CHICAGO CITY COUNCIL

December 2019

In this recent, controversial Chicago City Council meeting, the council voted to not delay recreational marijuana sales as asked by the Black caucus due to lack of diversity in dispensary ownership. Recreational marijuana got the final approval to become legalized on Jan. 1, 2020.

July 2019

I live-tweeted the CPS Board of Education meeting that was led by a newly appointed board. The meeting consisted of a lengthy public participation portion which included SEIU and CTU representatives. There was also a discussion on the new sustainable community school model and a overview of student misconduct cases.

The fairly new, but important, Social and Human Capital committee is focusing on creating an inclusive and high quality rubric for small business employers. They're also tasked with figuring out a game plan to minimize the impact of the next economic downturn on low-income communities.
